this article is very interesting. with the growing number of "power churches" or "mega churches" its easy to see that the market for church and Christianity has drifted from spreading the word and teachings of Christ to speading popularity of preachers just to gain attention and ultimately receive money to fund these churches.

Capitalism and the Church

I found this article about communism and the church. It interested me because the basis of the article is that a church cannot co-exist with communism. This means that the two do not mix and that in order for a church to keep full integrity, it must stay away from being involved in communism.

Morality vs. Religion

I found some news back from April talking about Morality vs. Religion. I found this subject interesting in class discussion so I wanted to find some information on it.

You can find this via the world wide web at http://www.capmag.com/news.asp?ID=1750.

The article basically speaks about any religious order clashing with moral standards and that if you based morality strictly off of religious values, then you will experience hell on Earth. It states that "life requires a code of secularism, rationality, egoism and freedom. (Capmag.com)" This is interesting because in religion, you learn that you should not live like the world or be secular and that you should not get caught up in your own ego. Also, when dealing with religions, there are a set of beliefs that you have to have, which some may believe limits your freedom of choice and thought. Therefore, based on all of this, it is not an accurate statement to say that morality is directly related to religion. It gave me a lot of insight on the way I think sometime, but overall, it was just interesting for me to learn that they are having open discussions about morality vs. religion across the nation.

hurricanes and gas prices

With the recent threat of hurricanes such as Hanna and Ike, many people across the coast have had to evacuate. I think this is a big enough inconvenienve already, however to add the the distress of people losing everything they have or having thier homes destroyed, gas companies have drastically hiked up gas prices. They do this becuase they know people have no choice if there was an evacuation. Crude oil has gone up to $109 a barrel due to the recent hurricanes moving up the gulf coast. When OPEC meets next week, there has been talk that some members want the price for the US to stay at $100 a barrel. To me this doesnt seem much better. I think that it is morally wrong for the gas companies and other people to intentionally hike the price of gas up when they know people who are troubled have no choice.
