I found some news back from April talking about Morality vs. Religion. I found this subject interesting in class discussion so I wanted to find some information on it.
You can find this via the world wide web at http://www.capmag.com/news.asp?ID=1750.
The article basically speaks about any religious order clashing with moral standards and that if you based morality strictly off of religious values, then you will experience hell on Earth. It states that "life requires a code of secularism, rationality, egoism and freedom. (Capmag.com)" This is interesting because in religion, you learn that you should not live like the world or be secular and that you should not get caught up in your own ego. Also, when dealing with religions, there are a set of beliefs that you have to have, which some may believe limits your freedom of choice and thought. Therefore, based on all of this, it is not an accurate statement to say that morality is directly related to religion. It gave me a lot of insight on the way I think sometime, but overall, it was just interesting for me to learn that they are having open discussions about morality vs. religion across the nation.

I didn't see an article there -- just a summary of a speech that was given.
As a side note, watch out for people associated with the Ayn Rand Institute. They're a radical anti-government free-market fundamentalist organization that defends selfishness and egoism as virtues. They are ideologically opposed to the very idea of altruism, and therefore tend to be very anti-religious, and, furthermore, on grounds which most people take to go against secular values and rationalism, and against any conception of freedom which is not entirely narrow.
Anyhow, your comments seem to me thoughtful and valuable. One thing that strikes me as strange about religion and morality is that most christian churches in our nation today seem committed to preaching about morality on a religious basis rather than discussing and debating morality on a religious basis. Religious texts give us topics and questions, and their application to our lives is not straightforward and uncomplicated. I wish more religious figures would use religious texts and ideas as a starting point towards helping people to be able to try to figure out how to live, instead of simply telling them (as this usually is phrased) "what the Bible says."
this article states that religion is "utterly incapable" of guiding human life on earth and also states that religion clashes with every principle of a proper moral code. As a Christian i do believe that religion has to do with moral decision. with out some form of religion influence wether you practice that religion or not people wouldnt know what is right or wrong. on the other hand i dont believe that being a Christian is a requirement for moral aptitude or altruism.
I agree -- except that I'm not sure why you think that some kind of religious influence people wouldn't know right from wrong. Why would this be?
